Dr. Joel Virkler received his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in 2014 at Beaumont Hospital Farmington Hills (formerly Botsford Hospital) with Michigan State University. During his residency, he received specialty surgery training in joint replacement, shoulder and elbow, foot and ankle, pediatric orthopedics, trauma and orthopedic oncology.
In 2015, Dr. Virkler completed his fellowship in Joint Reconstruction and Sports Medicine at Triangle Orthopaedic Associates in Durham, North Carolina. He received specialized surgical training in primary and revision joint replacement, Mako robotic joint replacement, including partial knee replacement, and sports injury surgeries.
He is the team physician for Faith Christian High School and Tri-County High School. Dr. Virkler is board-certified with the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons; the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopaedics; the American Osteopathic Association; the International Congress for Joint Reconstruction; and the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
