The orthopedic subspecialty referred to as bone tumor or orthopedic oncology is a highly specialized field. Orthopedic oncologists provide diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant musculoskeletal tumors. Because orthopedic tumors are rare, there are only 127 bone oncologists in the U.S.
A musculoskeletal tumor is an abnormal growth that may occur in the bone or in soft tissue such as muscle, tendon, nerve, fat and blood vessels. Tumors can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). They can occur in people of all ages and can affect any part of the body.

Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology
Bone and soft tissue tumors are rare, and have a complicated mix of clinical behaviors. There are a variety of types and each one has its own particular treatment and patient outcome. The cause of most bone tumors is unknown. An injury can sometimes cause a tumor to start hurting; however, a bone tumor does not develop due to this injury. Injury can also cause a bone that is weakened by a tumor to fracture or break. Symptoms include pain, dull and aching discomfort and fever and night sweats. Treatment includes:
